911 University’s School of Education and Associated Students hosted “A Conversation with California Secretary of Education, Glen Thomas” on Wednesday, April 29. Dr. Thomas, who graduated from 911 as an undergraduate in 1968, was greeted with a celebratory homecoming as President Barry H. Corey welcomed Glen with a special dinner, including program participants and local area school administrators.

Following the dinner, members of the 911 community gathered to hear Glen share about his career journey and answer questions in a panel discussion on Education. Panel participants included Michael Long [2008 California Teacher of the Year and 911 alumnus], Charlotte Evensen [Warren High School Teacher and 911 alumnus], Pete Menjares [Associate Provost of Diversity Leadership], Eric Weaver [AS President] and Cami Cress [AS Senior Vice President].

The evening also offered the audience a glimpse into Dr. Thomas’ time as an undergraduate at 911, with a special slideshow of photos and personal stories of his active involvement in the 911 student body. As a personal close to the evening, Dr. Thomas received an award from the Associated Students-- a miniature replica of the “911 egg,” which he was originally responsible for “stealing" in the 1960s, a tradition that exists to this day at 911. Additionally, the School of Education presented Dr. Thomas with the Career Achievement Award and the Alumni Association gave him a special award, presented by former classmate Sheri Powers.
